I have gone out UFO hunting a few times and I have seen unidentified aerial phenomena twice. One of those two times was today.
I planned a short UFO hunting trip for myself for today. So, right after work I went to a nearby restaurant for dinner. I figured it would be a couple of hours before the sun went down. So I decided that having dinner first was in order. I had one of my favorite pub grubs; fish and chips.
The sun went down faster than I thought it would. It was around six in the evening as I sat at the booth and had my dinner. Through the windows I saw that it was already dark. As soon as I finished my dinner I paid and left. I took a short drive up the street, to where the street ended. It ended at an empty field.
I parked and got out of my camper van (Yes, I converted my soccer-mom van into a camper van.) I got my binoculars and night-vision monocular out. It was good and dark all around me but there were lights about a quarter-mile away because I was still within city limits.
I looked up and observed the sky. I looked at it with my naked eyes, with my binoculars and with my night-vision monocular. I also looked around my surroundings. It was mostly quiet but I could hear the hum of city life not far away. I could also hear the crickets. It was beautiful and serene.
While observing the sky I could see many stars, I could see many airplanes, and I could see the new moon. Technically it was not a 100% new moon. Tonight's moon showed the presence of little crescent. It had reached its new moon phase a couple of nights ago but I'll refer to it as a new moon because its so near its new moon phase. Anyway, the new moon slowly dropped below the horizon and the night became a moonless night. The low city lights and the moonless night made it easier to observe objects in the sky.
As I already wrote I saw many planes and many stars. I immediately saw the constellation of Orion. I remembered that by following Orion's belt to the right (I'm in the west coast of the USA) we will see two other celestial objects worth noting. As I looked for any of those objects the first one that I could barely discern was the Pleiades star cluster. I wasn't sure if that is what it was because I was looking at it with my naked eyes. I got my binoculars and looked at it and I could definitely make out the star cluster. I could clearly see the seven sisters.
I remembered about the other object, the star Aldebaran. It is a bright star just to the right of Orion. Aldebaran sits between Orion and the Pleiades. The star is bright enough to be seen with the naked eye. I spotted it fast.
At one point I turned my attention back to sky for moving objects. As I said, I saw many moving objects; they were all airplanes (jets). All except for one.
As I looked towards the north I saw a bright object that appeared to be moving southward, in my direction. I watched it, expecting it to go over me. That object did not look like a plane. I got my binoculars and looked at it again. It did not have the same light pattern that planes have. It actually looked more like a satellite. I know what satellites look like because I have seen them before. I have seen the International Space Station many times.
When observing the international space station it will appear somewhere in the horizon and will disappear somewhere else in the horizon. Sometimes it flies directly overhead. I was expecting this object to fly overhead just like the International Space Station but it did not. It was not coming southward in my direction. It just looked like that from my vantage point. The object actually rose higher in the night sky and vanished. It literally vanished into space.
Sweet! I saw what I was looking for. Or at least I think I did. Truth be said, it was a strange phenomena. As I already wrote, I know what airplanes look like and I know what satellites look like in the night sky. This object was different, it literally flew straight up out of site.
NOTE:
There is an episode of Ancient Aliens in which Nick Pope and a couple of UFO investigators are out in a field observing the night sky. They see an object that appears to be crossing the night sky but instead of crossing the sky it vanishes out into black space.
That is the exact experience I had tonight.
