Well, it's because of a little told story about the San Patricios.
Well, you see, way back then. Way back when the south-west was still northern Mexico, when the Great Harlot from the north (the United States) invaded the southern territories (Mexico) a war ensued.
A battalion of Irish men enlisted into the Gringo military and straight away they were sent to fight the Mexicans in the south.
But once they arrived in the south they discovered that the true harlot was up north (the United States).
They saw the injustice that was being inflicted upon the Mexican people and they severed their ties with the Great Harlot from the north (the United States) and took up sides with the Mexican people.
Many of these heroes lost their lives. Some were hanged by the Great Harlot from the north and many died in battle. Some survived and their descendants still live in Mexico.
